Acclaimed
for the beauty, precision and expressive qualities of its singing,
the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus has been an important
part of the Orchestra's programming since its founding by the
late Robert Shaw in 1970. The Chorus is composed entirely of
volunteers, who meet weekly for rehearsals and perform with
the ASO several times each season. It is also featured on the
majority of the ASO's recordings.
During 2002-03 season the ASO Chorus appears with the Orchestra under the batons of Robert Spano for the Atlanta premiere of John Adam's new oratorio, El Nińo, John Nelson for Mendelssohn's Elijah, Donald Runnicles for Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (a recording project with Telarc International), Alan Gilbert for Beethoven Mass in C, and William Fred Scott for holiday concerts in December. The smaller Chamber Chorus performs a special holiday baroque Concert in December with Norman Mackenzie conducting, and in April performs Beethoven's Christus am Oelberge with historical music specialist Nicholas McGegan.
The ASO Chorus made its Carnegie Hall debut in 1976 with a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and has returned to perform there on a number of subsequent occasions. It performed in the Kennedy Center for President-elect Jimmy Carter's Inaugural Concert in 1977. In 1988, it accompanied the Orchestra on its first European tour, performing in New York, East Berlin, Zürich, Ludwigsburg, Paris, Bristol, and London. In 1989, the ASO Chorus received the Governor's Award for its outstanding contribution to the arts in Georgia. The Chorus has appeared with the Orchestra for televised concerts on several occasions, including the 1995 national broadcast of the ASO's 50th-anniversary celebration and the statewide telecast honoring the Chorus's own 25th anniversary. With the Orchestra it appeared in the Opening Ceremony of the 1996 Olympic Games, broadcast worldwide.
Recordings by the ASO Chorus that have won Grammy awards for Best Choral Performance include the Berlioz Requiem, Hindemith's When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd, the Verdi Requiem, Britten's War Requiem, Walton's Belshazzar's Feast, Harmonium by John Adams paired with The Bells by Rachmaninov, and a CD of choral masterpieces by Barber, Bartók and Vaughan Williams. Three of these have also won Grammies for Best Classical Album (all conducted by Robert Shaw). The ASO Chorus may be heard under Music Director Robert Spano on a critically acclaimed new recording of Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony and under Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles on Orff's Carmina Burana.
Norman Mackenzie, who worked closely with Robert Shaw for 14 years both at the ASO and in the maestro's various choral workshops and institutes, was chosen by the ASO to help carry forward Shaw's creative vision to a new generation of music lovers. He also serves as Director of Music for Atlanta's Trinity Presbyterian Church and pursues an active recital and guest conducting schedule.
